Navigation: About E-mail and Online Fraud

What is E-mail Fraud?

Fraudulent E-mail (ex: spoofing, phishing) is one that is created by an unauthorized person to look like it is a legitimate E-mail. The intent is to try to get you to provide personal, confidential information so it can be used for identity theft and financial fraud.

How Can I Recognize E-mail Fraud?

Fraudulent E-mails are hard to detect because the E-mail address seems authentic. We want to provide you with some examples to help educate you on the types of scams that are out there. Some indicators of fraudulent E-mails include typos, urgent and immediate appeals for you to respond, and general greetings, such as "Dear Guaranty Bank Customer."

View Samples of E-mail and Online Fraud

One possibility you can use is to open a new window by clicking on your Web browser icon (such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, AOL, etc.) and go to the financial services site directly to make sure the request for information is real. A special offer or promotion will provide you with a promotion code to include in the product application. Linking directly from the E-mail should not be a key component in participating in a special offer.

What Should I Do if I Received a Fraudulent E-mail About my Guaranty Account(s)?

Report it online

If you responded to the E-mail and provided your Guaranty Bank account information, call us immediately at 1-800-288-8822.

What Can I Do to Protect my Personal Information?

Keep a close eye on your accounts. Read your statements carefully.
Shred old statements or keep them in a secure place.
Memorize PINs & passwords. Don't keep PINs in your wallet or write them on the back of your ATM, credit card or check card. Do not share passwords for Money Line or Online Banking except to individuals you authorize to access your accounts. Change passwords regularly.
Do not share your account number with others. Don't let others borrow or use your check, ATM or credit card.
Never provide personal information over the phone unless you initiate the call. Do not respond to un-solicited E-mails requesting account or personal information-even if it is from a company you do business with.
Refrain from including personal or account information in non-secure E-mails over the Internet.
Shred pre-approved credit offers and receipts, which have account information or could link your name to your account.
Do not have your drivers license or SSN information printed on your checks.
Get a copy of your credit report every year.

Protecting Your Personal Information

We take safeguarding your privacy seriously. Our employee Code of Conduct and Privacy Agreements with our vendors and suppliers require that your personal information remain confidential. We restrict access to personal information about you to our employees and agents who need to know that information to provide products or services to you. Plus, we maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with federal standards to guard your personal information.

How Secure Is Online Banking?

Security with the World Wide Web begins with your browser. To protect transactions, we only accept log-ins originating from a browser that supports the highest level of encryption (128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL)). A list of such browsers is available here. Encryption prevents transactions from being read by unauthorized parties over the Internet. It scrambles data in transit between your Web browser and your bank's Web server.
